The Princess and the Pea

One stormy night, there was a knock on his door. When the prince opened it, he saw a girl. Her hair was wet. Her clothes were muddy. And she was shivering. "Hello. I am a princess. May I stay here tonight?" she asked. "Of course," he said kindly. (p.4,5)

I read this story for the first time in my life.  I think that seeing muddy girl is destiny. This story has scene that princess put a tiny pea on a bed. But I do not understand why.
